There are numerous FDA-approved FILLER products that are used in aesthetic medicine. In general, fillers are classified according to the substance they are made of.

Hyaluronic acid, used in aesthetic medicine, is the result of a complex of laboratory synthesis.

It comes in the form of a sterile, colorless and transparent gel.

Hyaluronic acid is a component found in human tissues, including the skin. This molecule is essential for the formation of collagen and elastic fibers and for keeping the skin hydrated. Changes in hyaluronic acid in the skin contribute to its aging over time. Hyaluronic acid exists naturally in all living organisms and is a universal component for the spaces between cells and body tissues (extracellular spaces).

Calcium hydroxyapatite is also a natural substance, mainly found in our bones. When used in a filler, the calcium particles are almost microscopic and suspended in a smooth gel. The consistency of a CaHA filler is typically thicker than that of a hyaluronic acid filler and usually lasts longer, about 12 months for most patients. Calcium hydroxylapatite also helps stimulate the natural production of collagen and is commonly used for deeper lines and wrinkles. Poly-L-lactic acid

Poly-L-lactic acid is a synthetic and biocompatible substance (which means it is safe to use in the body). Poly-L-lactic acid products are technically classified as “collagen boosters,” as their primary mechanism for smoothing fine lines is to help the skin rebuild its own natural collagen—the self-filling gel dissipates a few days after treatment.

Immediately before treatment, the area will be cleansed and a local anesthetic cream will be applied to numb the area before the injection.

Many filler products also contain lidocaine, a mild anesthetic intended to minimize discomfort during and after treatment. Depending on the product and the areas treated, you may notice results immediately after receiving filler injections.

Some patients experience slight bruising and swelling, but this is temporary and disappears within a few days of treatment. You can return to your normal activities immediately after treatment. How long do the results last?

Hyaluronic acid is not a permanent filler. Once injected, it is gradually metabolized by the body at different rates depending on the area treated and the type of product used. The filling and wrinkle-tightening or smoothing effect is immediate and lasts 2 to 12 months. In general, the more concentrated the product and the deeper it is injected, the longer it will last, although this is not a hard and fast rule. Hyaluronic acid fillers tend to be the most temporary option and for this reason are often recommended to patients who are having the procedure for the first time.
