Toothache

The term “toothache” refers to a generic pain, often very annoying and difficult to bear, which begins with penetrating pangs and limited spasms; starting from the affected tooth, the pain tends to progressively radiate into the neighboring gum tissues and other adjacent teeth, until in the most serious cases it also involves the supporting alveolar bone.

Toothache – better defined as odontalgia – is a very variable symptom that essentially depends on the underlying cause. Depending on the underlying disorder, toothache can in fact take on an acute and pulsating connotation or develop a milder pain that is accentuated in response to thermal/physical stimuli.

As we will see in the course of the discussion, toothache is normally due to a dental infection or inflammation of the gum; however, there is no shortage of cases of “psychological” or idiopathic toothache, which do not recognize an easily identifiable cause. Chipped teeth, dental hypersensitivity and tooth growth can also cause unpleasant toothache.

Toothache, which only regresses with correct treatment of the underlying causes, requires a dental visit to trace the etiological factor (responsible for the pain). Only after having ascertained the cause through a specialist check supported by an x-ray examination, is it possible to proceed with a specific intervention.

Why do you need a dentist?

Toothache is a wake-up call, a clear warning signal that should lead you to ask for dentist intervention.

Toothache, especially that of an infectious nature, always requires a check-up visit to the specialist: as we know, in fact, dental tissues cannot heal spontaneously because they do not enjoy regenerative capacity.

Too often, however, toothache is mistakenly trivialized and such behavior can prove particularly detrimental to the health of the oral cavity; in the presence of an ongoing infection, the toothache could in fact become increasingly accentuated, until it becomes truly unbearable and creates disproportionate damage. Even avoiding the dentist by suffocating a pathological toothache with megadoses of analgesic drugs can only magnify the damage in the long term; not to mention the effects that can be achieved by constantly taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to hide the pain.

In the presence of a persistent toothache, treatment should begin as soon as possible for at least two reasons:

Relieve pain quickly
Prevent complications such as deep dental infections (pulpitis, granulomas, cysts, dental abscesses, etc.)

Although today it is quite rare to have to resort to the extraction of teeth affected by mild-moderate infections, it is recommended not to procrastinate. By contacting the dental office as soon as possible, you can prevent toothache from turning into an unbearable torment. Let us remember, in fact, that bacteria begin their destructive journey starting from the enamel of the tooth, and then move ever deeper: even a small cavity can, in the long term, create disproportionate damage (serious infections, tooth loss, etc. ), also spilling into the surrounding tissues.
