TOOTH INFECTION

Dental infection is an invasion of pathogens (generally bacteria) which, through the dentin or root foramen, penetrate the tooth and multiply there, causing damage to the surrounding dental structures.

Although it is well established that tooth infection is one of the most feared complications after a tooth extraction, it is important to underline that a dental element can become infected even independently of avulsion interventions.

Just think, for example, that even a simple cavity is included in the long list of tooth infections: in similar circumstances the bacteria, sneaky and greedy for sugars, override the natural dental defenses starting from the enamel (the hard tissue of the tooth) and, penetrating the dentin up to the dental pulp, they gradually destroy it.

It is not always so immediate to notice a dental infection in progress, especially if dental procedures have not been performed in the short term.

Generally speaking, it is possible to roughly distinguish the typical symptoms of “common” dental infections from those characteristic of more serious and profound infectious processes.

Superficial tooth infections can cause toothache, localized pain, edema (swelling) and dentinal hypersensitivity to temperature and chewing.

Patients affected by deeper dental infections, such as abscesses, granulomas or cysts, may instead experience more serious and dangerous symptoms, such as high fever, difficulty swallowing, pain when opening the mouth and, in some serious cases, even breathing difficulties. .

The general classification of dental infections provides a first distinction based on the origin of the disorder:

Periodontal origin: the infection occurs from a periodontal disease (e.g. pyorrhea), which involves the gums, connecting elastic fibers and supporting alveolar bone cavity.

Pericoronal origin: the infection comes from damage inflicted on the crown of the tooth (e.g. tooth decay). The infectious process begins from the enamel of the tooth, and then eventually spreads to the dentin and dental pulp.

Traumatic-surgical origin: the infection (e.g. alveolitis) is closely linked to a failed invasive dental procedure, or to failure to comply with precautionary rules after the extraction of a tooth or another dental operation.

Prevention of tooth infections

Adequate multi-daily oral hygiene is the number one rule for preventing dental infections. The regular and combined use of a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss and mouthwash protects the teeth from bacterial attack, while making them healthy, strong and resistant to infections. Let us briefly remember that insufficient removal of food residues and plaque from the teeth enormously predisposes to the risk of dental infections of all types, ranging from the simplest tooth decay to the most complex abscess.

To further protect your teeth from bacterial insults, it is highly recommended to undergo scaling every 6-12 months. Professional dental cleaning is extremely useful for removing stubborn tartar and plaque deposits from the teeth, which cannot be removed by simple cleaning with a manual or electric toothbrush.
