Is it common to experience pain after having dental implants placed?

During dental implant surgery, a surgeon opens the tissue in your mouth and drills one or more titanium rods into the bone under your gums. This provides a permanent root for a false replacement tooth.

You will be under local anesthesia and should feel no pain during the dental implant surgery. Your oral surgeon will explain anesthesia options to you before surgery. Your specific needs may require a certain type of anesthesia to avoid feeling pain during the procedure.

Recovery may include pain that lasts a few days, but can be managed with medication. Pain that lasts more than a few days or gets worse may require medical attention.

Getting dental implants is often the middle part of a three-step process. The entire process may involve removing the tooth, inserting the implant rod or screw, and inserting the replacement tooth. These procedures may be spaced far apart. Your oral surgeon will wait to place a replacement crown until the bone has firmly attached the titanium rods.
